Sport continues to go from strength to strength at RGS Surrey Hills. During the 2025-26 academic year, pupils have enjoyed more opportunities to compete, more fixtures, stronger partnerships and greater access to specialist coaching than ever before. Alongside record participation, the school has celebrated success at national level while continuing to build a sporting programme that encourages every pupil to get involved, develop their skills and enjoy representing the school.
The year’s standout achievement came in football, where the Under 12 boys became English Schools’ FA National Champions with victory in the national final at the Bet365 Stadium. It is a remarkable achievement for the school and reflects the steady development of the football programme over recent years.
The girls’ football programme has enjoyed an equally impressive season. The Junior A team finished third nationally in the Sisters in Sport competition after an excellent campaign, with Rosie recognised as Player of the Playoff in the third-place match. Across the school, participation in girls’ football continues to grow, with more teams, more fixtures and increasing numbers of pupils choosing to represent RGS Surrey Hills.
Individual success has also been a feature of the year. Several pupils have progressed into professional football academies, including a Year 7 pupil signing for Brighton & Hove Albion Women’s Academy, while others have been selected for county and regional pathways across a range of sports. These achievements are a reflection of the commitment shown by the pupils themselves and the support they receive from staff and coaches throughout the school.
Success has extended well beyond football.
The Rugby Sevens programme celebrated victory in the Surrey Rugby Sevens Second Tier competition, while the cricket programme produced Regional Indoor Champions and saw pupils progress into the Surrey County Cricket Pathway. Athletics, cross country, rowing and golf have all produced strong individual performances, with pupils qualifying for district, county and national competitions throughout the year.
Just as important has been the continued growth of sport across the school. More teams have been introduced, Saturday fixtures have expanded, and pupils now have access to a wider range of competitive opportunities than at any point in recent years. Whether representing the school for the first time or competing at county level, every pupil is encouraged to challenge themselves and enjoy being part of school sport.
That growth has been supported by a number of new partnerships. Pupils have benefited from coaching and development opportunities through organisations including the Chelsea Foundation, the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA), Surrey 89ers Basketball, Holcombe Hockey Club and the German Hockey Association. New links with a United States college football scholarship programme have also opened further opportunities for pupils considering university overseas.
The Sports Scholarship programme has continued to develop through a structured strength and conditioning programme, helping pupils improve their physical performance, build resilience and reduce the risk of injury. Delivered before and after the school day, these sessions have become an important part of the sporting culture at RGS Surrey Hills and have supported an increasing number of pupils progressing into county, regional and national pathways.
Sport also plays an important role beyond competition. Throughout the year, pupils have supported local primary school sports events, taken on leadership responsibilities, hosted regional tournaments and enjoyed opportunities to watch top-level sport. These experiences help develop confidence, teamwork and leadership while strengthening the school’s links with the wider community.
As the programme continues to grow, the focus remains the same: providing every pupil with the opportunity to take part, improve and enjoy sport. National titles and representative honours are achievements to celebrate, but they are part of a much bigger picture. At RGS Surrey Hills, sport is about building character, encouraging ambition and giving young people the confidence to discover what they are capable of.
