Careers

Promoting a career development culture is an essential part of the mission and ethos of RGS Surrey Hills. We aim to support the aspirations of all our students and ensure they gain the understanding, skills and experience needed to make informed choices to achieve personal and economic wellbeing throughout their lives.

The careers programme is underpinned by the Round Square ‘Ideals’, which prepare pupils for their life beyond education, providing them with experiences that demand courage, generosity, imagination, principle and resolution.

Commitment and Development

We are committed to providing all students with a planned programme of careers education activities throughout their school career. All teaching staff contribute to the careers education provision through their roles as form tutors and subject teachers. The careers programme is planned, monitored and evaluated annually, in consultation with the senior leadership team, governors, students, parents/guardians and the school’s career co-ordinator who is a registered professional member of the Careers Development Institute (CDI).

Student Entitlement

All students are entitled to a careers education, information, advice and guidance program that:

  • supports students to achieve their full potential
  • is integrated into the students’ experience of the whole curriculum
  • encourages students to develop decision making skills so they can plan and manage their career aspirations
  • provides up-to-date comprehensive and accessible information on all options available to them
  • raises aspirations and promotes equality and diversity
  • provides impartial career advice and guidance that is tailored to the needs of the student

Curriculum

The careers learning outcomes are adapted from the CDI framework which supports the planning, delivery and evaluation of careers, employability and enterprise education for children and young people.

The career activities will include: careers education lessons, careers guidance activities (group work and individual interviews), information and research sessions and work-related learning. Target activities will include: HE and industry visits, career talks, mock interviews and Futures Week, which supports Year 12 with their post 18 transitions. Years 11 and 12 will complete a careers development plan after they have had a meeting with our qualified Careers Advisor. These are reviewed and updated at key decision points.
