Model United Nations (MUN)

Welcome to Model United Nations

At RGS Surrey Hills, we believe education extends far beyond the classroom. Model United Nations (MUN) gives pupils the opportunity to explore global issues, develop their voice and learn how collaboration, diplomacy and leadership can shape the world around them.

As a founding member school of Round Square, international understanding is woven into everyday life at RGS Surrey Hills. MUN is a natural extension of this ethos, encouraging students to think critically, consider different perspectives and engage confidently with some of the most important issues facing our world today.

Open to pupils of all experience levels, MUN develops confidence, communication and leadership through debate, negotiation and teamwork. Whether speaking in front of an audience for the first time or leading discussions on complex global challenges, every pupil is encouraged to contribute, grow and discover their potential.

MUN embodies the true spirit of our IDEALS: Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service.

What is Model United Nations (MUN)?

MUN is a student-led simulation of the United Nations, the international organisation responsible for addressing global issues and creating diplomacy among nations. Pupils take on the roles of delegates representing various countries and work together to tackle complex global challenges. Pupils engage in research, public speaking, negotiation, and consensus-building while learning about international relations and global affairs.

What happens at an MUN conference?

1. Lobbying

Before formal debate begins, delegates meet informally to discuss ideas, build alliances and gain support for their resolutions. This is where collaboration and negotiation begin.

2. Opening Speeches

Each delegation delivers a one-minute speech introducing its country and outlining its position on the issues to be debated.

3. Resolution Approval

Resolutions supported by the required number of delegates are reviewed to ensure they meet conference guidelines before being selected for debate.

4. Committee Sessions

Delegates present their country’s position, debate proposals, suggest amendments and work together to improve resolutions through constructive discussion.

5. General Assembly

The strongest resolutions are presented to the full General Assembly, where delegates debate and vote before resolutions are either adopted or rejected.

Why take part in Model United Nations?

Through MUN, students develop skills that extend well beyond the conference itself.

  • Build confidence in public speaking
  • Learn to negotiate and collaborate
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Gain a deeper understanding of global affairs
  • Prepare for university interviews and future careers
  • Make friends with students from schools around the world

At RGS Surrey Hills, Model United Nations is more than a debating competition. It is an opportunity for pupils to become thoughtful, informed and compassionate global citizens – developing the confidence, character and leadership to make a positive difference in an ever-changing world.
