At RGS Surrey Hills, sport is fundamental to the development of confident, capable, and healthy individuals. We view physical activity as a lifelong journey, one that supports wellbeing, ambition, and a positive sense of self.
Our inclusive and aspirational programme allows every pupil to thrive, whether through competitive fixtures, personal challenge, or recreational activity. We aim to foster resilience, belonging and enjoyment through movement at all levels of engagement.
Competitive Sports & Fixtures
We maintain a rich and varied fixture calendar, competing weekly across a range of sports including Football, Netball, Hockey, Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Basketball and Athletics. Additional opportunities in Cross Country, athletics and Golf, ensure that all pupils can represent the school and experience the rewards of team commitment and sporting challenge.
Games Lessons
Each year group participates in a weekly Games afternoon, where the major competitive sport(s) of the term are taught, coached, and developed. These lessons lay the foundations for strong team culture, skills development, and preparation for fixtures and tournaments.
In Years 7–9, pupils follow a structured programme that builds teamwork, movement competence, and tactical awareness across our seasonal sports. From Year 10 onwards, pupils are given more autonomy through a wider range of Games options including Basketball, Strength & Conditioning, Spin Sessions, Trail Running, Mountain Biking, Golf and Ultimate. These activities are reviewed termly in consultation with pupils to ensure they remain fresh, relevant, and engaging.
Our Games provision links directly with the Saturday Sport programme, enabling pupils to further their progression through weekend training and inter-school fixtures.
Saturday Sport Programme
Launching in September 2025, our new Saturday Sport initiative will enhance both competitive and developmental opportunities for pupils across key sports. These Saturday sessions will feature structured coaching, specialist input and additional match play in partnership with our Games and PE staff.
This growing programme reflects our long-term commitment to both performance and participation and strengthens the sense of school spirit and team identity beyond the school week.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Movement is central to our approach at RGS Surrey Hills. Our PE curriculum prioritises physical literacy, supporting pupils to move with control, confidence, and enjoyment. In lessons, pupils explore a variety of activities that develop physical competence and creativity, including Gymnastics, Dance, Wide Games, Tennis, Badminton, Pickleball and Zumba. These are underpinned by themes of personal challenge, resilience, communication, and collaboration. Our aim is for all pupils to understand the importance of physical activity in maintaining mental, emotional, and social wellbeing and to build a foundation of healthy, active living that lasts beyond their school years.
