Welcome to the story of RGS Surrey Hills – a school built on rich traditions and a spirit of forward-thinking education.
Originally founded in 1959 as Box Hill School by visionary educator Roy McComish, the school has always embraced the values of academic curiosity, community, and global citizenship. As a founding member of Round Square, our commitment to developing young people of character, compassion, and capability continues to define who we are today.
In June 2025, Box Hill School becomes RGS Surrey Hills, joining the Reigate Grammar School (RGS) Group of Schools. This exciting new chapter allows us to build on our proud heritage while expanding the opportunities available to our students, staff, and families both locally and globally. Though our name has changed, our ethos remains the same: inclusive, nurturing and ambitious.

Over the decades, our school has been led by just five Headteachers, each contributing to the close-knit, family atmosphere that defines our community. Under the leadership of Ms Hayley Robinson, we continue to grow while staying true to the values set out by our founder.

Our campus holds many stories – none more iconic than Dalewood House, our main school building. Designed in 1883 by Victorian architect John Norton, Dalewood is a blend of Gothic and mock Tudor styles, once home to David Evans, a renowned silk printer and chairman of Evans & Co. Its character is felt in every detail, from the wood panelling and stained-glass windows to its role as a private home turned wartime requisition in 1939.
In the school’s early days, students helped construct several of the original buildings which is an early reflection of our “have a go” spirit and belief in hands-on learning. That same spirit lives on at Box Hill School today.
As we look to the future, we honour the past – not just through buildings and dates, but through the values and relationships that continue to define our school community.
